A mindless rhythm?

It’s easy to think that patterns in nature are mindless. Millions of wildebeest migrate every year. A given fact. A pattern forced by the will to survive as they push to lands with plentiful resources.

But as the collective pushes on - do we assume the individuals never contemplate the reasons behind their movements?

Do they question the collective?

As I captured “Crossroads,” I did my best to convey this idea of mindfulness within wildlife. Using a slow shutter technique, I captured the movements of a group of wildebeest crossing a road while also drawing attention to the stillness of one individual animal.

As he lets others in the group pass, he stands on the edge of the road, as if in deep contemplation. It’s almost as if he’s asking himself “why cross?”

In this one wildebeest, I see myself, surrounded by my peers in the rat race of daily life, questioning the collective but fearing the consequences of choosing not to follow.
