Are lions introverts?

The scope of the Great Migration is undeniably incredible. Millions of nomadic animals moving cohesively through territory after territory make it one of the world’s most exciting spectacles of nature for wildlife enthusiasts.

But what about the permanent residents?

Every summer, the lions of the Masai Mara must endure a season with millions of invaders overtaking their homes. Masses of wildebeest and zebra raid the otherwise vacuous plains of their domain. Thousands of tourists occupy their territory, jockeying to catch a glimpse of both the migrating hoards and the lions themselves.

It has to be overwhelming.

It’s easy to assume that predators must delight in the influx in potential prey. It’s more difficult to consider the emotional impact that this “busy season” might have on these potential introverts.

“Shrouded” captures a moment of reclusion for this lone lioness as she seeks shelter from the invaders.

She hides in a bush, safe from the prying eyes of tourists. Hidden from the endless hoards of trespassing wildebeest and zebra. Shrouded from all but my 560mm super telephoto lens.
